Breakthrough British sensation Emeli Sande brings her retro-futuristic sound and eclectic sense of style to the US
Emeli Sande's 'Our Version of Events' overtook Adele's 21 to become the best-selling album in the UK in 2012. If the success she has achieved "across the pond" provides any indication on what to expect in her transition to the US, I'd say we have a lot to look forward to!
Sound and Style
Sande's classic soulful sound and trademark platinum spiked hair style has made her an up-and-coming fashion icon. When asked if her look is important to her as an emerging artist, she agreed. "You want people to recognize you instantly, and you definitely want people to have an image of you when they hear your music," said Sande.
Standing out on her own is important. Comparisons have already been made by British artist Adele (coincidentally Sande's first name is also Adele). While Adele's album was inspired by a breakup, 'Our Version of Events' has a more upbeat tone. "I try and give people a different way of thinking about things, or a positive way of thinking about things," Sandie said.
Sande Takes Home Two Brit Awards
The 2013 Brit Awards further solidified the Scottish singer/songwriter's exceptional talent when scored in two out of the four categories she was nominated for. She took home awards for Best British Female Artist and the biggest honor of the night, Best British Album, for her debut record 'Our Version of Events'
Oozing with emotion upon her big win, Sandé humbly broke into her acceptance speech. "Wow. I think I'm a very unlikely pop star," she remarked. "This is an album I wrote because I didn't have the confidence to sing these things in person.”
What's Next For Emeli Sande?
After a whirlwind year, Sande is now on a tour of the U.S. She says focusing on "making a second album that I'm very proud of and taking the music over here is a big challenge ahead of me."
There are already fans and artists this side of the Atlantic who are waiting for her to make her mark. Jay-Z has been quoted as saying Sande has the talent to conquer America. That confidence is a boost for Sande.
"I've been so inspired by artists from over here — you know, Nina Simone was one of my biggest inspirations when I was a kid," she says. "So, to come and have a successful career over here would kind of complete a circle. It's important to me."
